Houston has a genuinely thriving anime and convention scene — big enough to draw national guests, deep enough to have its own homegrown traditions. If you're trying to map out con season, here's the 2026 lay of the land.

Anime Matsuri (the flagship)

Houston's biggest and best-known anime convention. Anime Matsuri is a multi-day spectacle with major guests, voice actors, J-fashion and J-rock acts, a massive dealer's hall, cosplay everywhere, and a fashion-and-music angle that sets it apart from a standard comic con. If you're going to do one Houston anime con, this is the marquee event. Expect crowds, expect lines, expect it to be worth it.

Comicpalooza (the everything con)

Technically a broader pop-culture convention rather than anime-specific, Comicpalooza is one of the largest cons in Texas and packs in a huge anime contingent alongside comics, gaming, film guests, and cosplay. Held downtown at the convention center, it's the biggest single nerd gathering in the city. Anime fans find plenty to love even though it's not anime-exclusive.

Smaller and regional cons

Beyond the big two, the greater Houston area and nearby Texas cities host a rotating cast of smaller anime and gaming conventions throughout the year — more intimate, more affordable, and often better for actually meeting people and artists. These are where the local scene's heart really beats. Follow Houston anime community pages to catch dates as they're announced, since the smaller-con calendar shifts year to year.

How to do con season right

Buy badges early. The big cons get pricier (or sell out) as the date approaches.

Plan your cosplay logistics. Houston heat plus a full costume plus a convention center is a real combination — hydrate and pack a repair kit.

Hit the artist alley with cash. The best finds are indie artists, and many are cash-friendly.

Pace yourself. Multi-day cons are marathons. Sleep, eat, and don't try to do everything on day one.

Stack the weekend. Pair your con with Houston's anime stores, themed bars, and ramen spots for a full otaku weekend.

Why Houston is good for this

Houston's enormous, diverse population includes a huge and passionate anime fanbase, which supports a real ecosystem — stores, bars, ramen joints, and the cons that tie them together. Con season here isn't a niche; it's a scene. Get your badge and dive in.
