Houston to Austin is about 165 miles and, depending on which route you take, 2.5 to 3 hours of driving. It is the shortest of the big-three Texas city drives from Houston — and you actually get a choice of routes.
The Short Answer
Distance: about 162–165 miles depending on route.
Drive time: 2.5 to 3 hours in good conditions. Push to 4 if you hit rush hour on either end.
Two routes: I-10 West to TX-71 West is the fast, all-highway option. US-290 West through Brenham is the scenic one and is actually a hair shorter in miles.
Which Route to Take
Take I-10 to TX-71 if you just want to get there — it is well-maintained with frequent gas, food, and rest stops, and it is the option most mapping apps default to. Take US-290 if you want the experience: rolling Hill Country, small towns like Chappell Hill and Giddings, and the Blue Bell Creamery in Brenham. The catch on 290 is fewer gas stations, so top off your tank around Brenham. A lot of locals run 71 out and 290 back for variety.
When to Leave
Mornings out of Houston and afternoons into Austin are the slow spots — Austin traffic around I-35 and MoPac gets heavy after 4 p.m. and on weekends. Leave early and you can make Austin a comfortable day trip.
The Stops Worth Making
The Katy Buc-ee’s is the classic kickoff stop on the way out of Houston. On 290, Brenham’s Blue Bell Creamery is the must-do — factory views and fresh ice cream. Bastrop State Park near the Austin end is worth it for pine forest and the Colorado River. In spring, both routes run through bluebonnet country.
Bottom Line
At ~165 miles, Houston to Austin is an easy day trip with a built-in choice: fast and simple on 71, or slow and scenic on 290 with a Blue Bell stop. Either way you are there in under three hours. And for everything to do back home in Houston, Plan Your Day Houston is your local guide.
