Houston to Dallas is 239 miles by road, and on a clear day you can do it in about three and a half to four hours straight up I-45 North. That is the whole answer most people are looking for — but the drive has a few wrinkles worth knowing before you set the cruise control.
The Short Answer
Distance: 239 miles (about 385 km) door to door, downtown to downtown.
Drive time: 3.5 to 4 hours with light traffic. Hit Houston rush hour on the way out and it stretches to 5 hours fast.
Route: I-45 North the entire way. No turns, no detours, no thinking required — it is one of the simplest interstate drives in Texas.
When You Should Actually Leave
The single biggest factor in your drive time is when you exit Houston. Morning rush north out of the city is heavier than people expect — leave before 7 a.m. or after 9 a.m. and you skip the worst of it. The Dallas end is usually smoother. The I-45 expansion construction around the Houston side has been narrowing lanes, so build in a 30-minute buffer if you are leaving during peak hours.
The Stops Worth Making
The halfway point is Centerville, about two hours in either direction — a good gas-and-stretch break. The bigger stops most Houstonians make: Conroe (about 40 miles out, with Lake Conroe and Sam Houston National Forest right off the highway), Huntsville, and Corsicana as you near Dallas. If you make the drive in spring, the bluebonnet fields near Ennis just south of Dallas are worth a five-minute detour in March and April.
Driving vs. Flying
A flight from Hobby or Bush to Dallas is about 45 minutes in the air — but once you add security, boarding, and getting to and from two airports, the four-hour drive is usually the more sensible call unless you are going carless. Amtrak runs the route once daily but takes over nine hours, so it is more of a scenic experience than a practical option.
Bottom Line
Houston to Dallas is an easy, honest four-hour shot up I-45. Time your exit from Houston right and it is one of the most painless long drives in the state. And if you are looking for what to do once you are back home in Houston — or what is worth a day trip closer than Dallas — that is exactly what we built Plan Your Day Houston for.
